Tips for riding safely

A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to riding overseas. Here are a few things worth checking before you hop on a scooter, moped or motorcycle.

Check your licence

Confirm your Australian licence covers the type of vehicle you're planning to ride and carry it with you at all times. Some destinations may require an International Driving Permit alongside your Australian licence, so it's worth checking before you go.

Wear protective gear

A helmet is essential for cover to apply, but it's also worth considering additional protective gear like long sleeves, sturdy footwear and gloves, particularly in destinations where road conditions or traffic can be unpredictable.

Know local road rules

Road rules, riding conventions and traffic patterns can vary significantly between countries. Take time to understand local laws before you ride and stay alert to differences like which side of the road traffic travels on.

Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance can cover you if you're involved in a scooter or motorcycle accident overseas, but the type of cover depends on what you’re actually claiming.

Generally, if you're injured in an accident while riding legally your policy can cover you for overseas medical expenses, hospital costs and emergency assistance, including evacuation if needed.

It's important to note that travel insurance covers you, not the vehicle. Damage to the scooter or motorcycle itself isn't covered and you'd typically need to rely on the rental provider's own insurance for that.

Cover also won't apply if you’re riding:

  • without a valid licence
  • under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • in a way that disregards your own safety or local road rules
  • without a helmet.

With RACV International Travel Insurance, $unlimited medical expenses and emergency assistance^ for scooter and motorcycle accidents are included at no extra cost on all international plans.|| Overseas emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day if you need help following an accident.

RACV Domestic Travel Insurance doesn’t cover medical costs from a scooter or motorcycle accident, but you may be able to claim for damaged luggage, legal liability and accidental disability or death.

Yes, to be covered while riding a motorcycle overseas, you need to hold a current Australian motorcycle licence. This applies even in destinations where a local licence isn't required to ride.

While most insurers require a valid Australian licence regardless of local rules, you should also check whether your destination has its own licensing requirements. Some countries require an International Driving Permit alongside your Australian licence before you're legally permitted to ride.

If you don't hold a valid licence for the vehicle you're riding, any related claim may be declined. This applies whether the lack of a valid licence was deliberate or simply overlooked.

RACV Travel Insurance provides motorcycle cover as standard, as long as you have a current Australian motorcycle licence, are wearing a helmet and are obeying all local road rules.|| It's a good idea to confirm your licence details before you travel and to always carry it with you while riding.

Yes, if you're riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter, cover is available with RACV Travel Insurance provided the rider holds a licence that's valid in the country you're in and local road rules are being followed.

For a claim to be valid, a few conditions still need to be met. You'll need to be wearing a helmet at the time of any accident and the trip needs to otherwise comply with your policy's standard conditions, including not riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs and taking reasonable care for your own safety.

With RACV Travel Insurance, passenger cover applies on motorcycles, mopeds and scooters across Comprehensive, Essentials and Basics international plans, as well as Annual Multi-Trip, provided the rider holds a licence valid for the country you're in.|| If you're planning to ride as a passenger overseas, it's worth checking the rider's licence is valid before you hop on.

RACV Travel Insurance includes motorcycle, moped and scooter cover as standard on all plans. There's no need to add it separately or pay an additional premium.||

Cover applies provided you meet the criteria set out in the PDS, including:

  • holding an Australian licence appropriate to the vehicle (if you’re driving)
  • wearing a helmet
  • taking reasonable care of your safety
  • following local road rules.

The same conditions apply whether you're riding or travelling as a passenger, although as a passenger you simply need to ensure the driver has a valid local licence.

No, if a rented scooter or motorcycle is damaged in an accident, that's typically covered separately through the rental provider's own insurance, a damage waiver or your own arrangements with the hire company.

Many hire companies offer their own insurance or damage waiver options at the time of rental, so make sure you understand what's included and what excess might apply if the vehicle is damaged or stolen while in your care.

RACV Travel Insurance provides cover for medical expenses, hospital costs and emergency assistance  if you're injured while riding or as a passenger on a scooter or motorbike, but not for damage to the vehicle itself.

It's also worth noting that Rental Car Excess cover (available on selected plans##) doesn't extend to motorcycles, mopeds or scooters either, as that cover applies specifically to cars and similar vehicles.

No, travel insurance doesn’t generally cover racing, competitions or any timed motorsport event, even if you hold a valid motorcycle licence and are otherwise riding legally. This is a standard travel insurance  exclusion, reflecting the higher likelihood of injury in competitive riding environments.

RACV Travel Insurance motorcycle and scooter cover applies to everyday riding only – getting around, exploring and general transport during your trip. It does not extend to racing, competitions or any timed event.

Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement in most destinations for anyone riding or travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter – and it's also essential for your travel insurance cover to apply.

With RACV Travel Insurance, wearing a helmet is a condition of cover for motorcycle, moped and scooter claims, for both riders and passengers, regardless of the rules of the country you’re riding in.

If you're involved in an accident and weren't wearing a helmet at the time, your claim may be declined, even if the accident itself wasn't caused by the lack of helmet. This applies to riders and passengers alike, so make sure everyone is properly equipped before you set off.

Yes, scooter cover is included as standard on all RACV International Travel Insurance plans, with no need to add it separately or pay extra, including for trips to Bali.

Cover applies provided you meet the criteria set out in the PDS, including:

  • holding an Australian licence appropriate to the vehicle
  • wearing a helmet
  • taking reasonable care of your safety
  • following Indonesian laws and road rules.

Even if you’re a passenger you’ll need to wear a helmet, follow the rules and ensure your driver has a valid local licence. Also note that cover won’t apply if you’re driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs when you have an accident.

ǁ ‘Moped or Scooter’ (two or three wheeled motor vehicle (including e-scooters) with engine capacity up to 50cc), ‘Motorcycle’ (two or three wheeled motor vehicle (including electronic versions) with engine capacity equal to or greater than 50cc) and ‘Quad Bike’ are defined in the PDS. Cover is subject to general exclusions, including where you are operating or travelling as a passenger without wearing a helmet and driving without meeting specific licensing requirements. Refer to the PDS for full definitions, terms, conditions and exclusions.
