How to compare travel insurance policies

When comparing travel insurance policies, it’s important to consider both your budget and the level of cover you’re looking for. Here are the key factors to review before you decide.

What is and isn’t included

Every policy has inclusions and exclusions and you should read both carefully. A cheaper policy might leave out cover you need, like cancellation fees or luggage.

Limits and sub-limits

Policies have overall limits per section, but also sub-limits on specific items. For example, RACV Essentials covers luggage up to $7,500 but caps  smartphones at $500.

Excess levels

The excess is what you pay when you make a claim. A lower excess usually means a higher premium and vice versa. Think about what you'd be comfortable paying out of pocket if something went wrong.

Medical conditions

If you have a medical condition, check how each policy handles it before you buy. RACV Travel Insurance automatically covers 38 conditions, while others need to be assessed and may cost extra.~

Activities and sports

Planning to ski, scuba dive or go whitewater rafting? Some  activities require optional add-ons, while others may be excluded. Check the policy's sports and activities list against what you're planning to do and any conditions that may apply.

Optional extras

Most RACV policies let you add cover for things like cruises**, ski and winter sports and higher cancellation limits. These add to your premium but are important in case something goes wrong.

Value vs price

The cheapest policy isn't always the most appropriate policy. Compare what's covered at each price point, as a small difference in premium could mean a big difference in cover.

Who’s covered

Check whether your policy covers everyone travelling with you. RACV Travel Insurance includes children and grandchildren aged 25 and under at no additional premium.++

Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance provides cover for unexpected events that can disrupt or cut short a trip, from medical emergencies and cancelled flights to lost luggage and personal liability.

Common inclusions include:

  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses
  • Emergency expenses
  • Luggage and personal money
  • Personal liability
  • Accidental death and disability.

The exact cover, limits and exclusions vary between policies and plan levels, so it's worth reading the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully before you buy.

RACV Travel Insurance offers three levels of international cover – ComprehensiveEssentials and Basics – as well as Domestic and Annual Multi-Trip options, so you can choose the level of cover for your trip. All international plans include $unlimited overseas medical and hospital cover.

The most appropriate policy is the one that matches your destination, the length of your trip and what you're planning to do when you get there.

Here are some key things to weigh up:

  • Destination: Travelling internationally means medical costs can be significant. Make sure any policy you consider includes adequate overseas medical and hospital cover.
  • Cancellation cover: If you've pre-paid for flights, accommodation or tours, check that the cancellation limit is high enough to cover your actual costs.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: If you or a travelling companion have a medical condition, confirm how each policy handles it and whether an assessment is needed before you travel.
  • Optional extras: Cruises and ski trips often need specific cover that isn't included in a standard policy.
  • Excess levels: Consider what you'd be comfortable paying out of pocket and adjust your excess accordingly.

A lower premium doesn't always mean better value. Comparing what's covered at each level, including any exclusions, limits, sub-limits, and any general exclusions that apply will help you make a more informed decision.

RACV Travel Insurance offers flexible options across international and domestic travel, with flexible cancellation cover on most policies and optional extras for cruises** and ski and winter sports. Get a quote today – it only takes a few minutes. RACV Members save 15%.

Basic and comprehensive travel insurance policies cover the same broad categories of events, but differ significantly in the limits, sub-limits, inclusions and exclusions available at each level.

A basic policy will typically offer:

  • Lower cover limits across all sections.
  • Fewer inclusions and some benefits may not be available at all.
  • A lower premium for straightforward, lower-risk trips.

While a comprehensive policy will typically offer:

  • Higher limits across medical, cancellation, luggage and other benefits.
  • A broader range of inclusions and sub-limits.
  • Access to optional extras like cancellation cover and ski and winter sports insurance.

The right level depends on your trip. A basic policy might be enough for a short domestic getaway with minimal pre-paid costs. For international travel, longer trips or anything involving significant upfront spend, a higher level of cover is usually worth considering.

For single overseas trips, RACV Travel Insurance offers three plans – Basics, Essentials and Comprehensive – so you can choose the level of cover for your trip.

While all International plans come with $unlimited overseas medical and hospital^, along with cover for luggage and emergency expenses, Essentials and Comprehensive include higher limits, sub-limits and a choice of cancellation limit, along with cover for rental car excess, flight delays and more. You can also add Ski & Winter Sports cover to both Essentials and Comprehensive plans.

RACV Travel Insurance includes travel delay cover across Comprehensive, Essentials, Annual Multi-Trip and Domestic plans, reimbursing reasonable additional accommodation, meal and travel expenses for delays of 6 hours or more due to reasons outside your control.

If you miss a flight or connection due to events outside your control, RACV Travel Insurance also covers reasonable additional travel and accommodation costs to help you get back on track. If you’re attending a pre-arranged special event, like a wedding or music festival, you also have cover for additional transport costs to help you arrive on time.

Keep in mind that delays caused directly by your airline or transport provider aren't covered by RACV Travel Insurance.

Value looks different depending on the trip you’re planning. A travel insurance policy that provides cover for a weekend in Bali might leave significant gaps for a month in Europe.

Here are a few things to consider when weighing up value:

  • Cancellation limits: Look at what you've pre-paid for flights, accommodation, tours or cruises, and make sure your cancellation limit is high enough to cover it.
  • Medical cover: if you're travelling internationally, always check the overseas medical and hospital limits. Unlimited cover gives you more certainty than a capped amount, as medical costs can add up quickly.
  • Sub-limits: A high overall luggage limit doesn't always mean individual items are well covered. Check the sub-limits for things like laptops, cameras and phones.
  • What's included, and what isn't: Understanding what isn't covered can be just as important as understanding what is, and some benefits are only available on higher-tier plans. Compare the full list of inclusions, exclusions and general exclusions rather than just the premium.
  • Excess: A lower excess means less out of pocket if you need to make a claim but will result in a higher premium.†

Most travel insurance policies cover the fundamentals, but the differences show up in the inclusions, limits and add-ons.

Here are a few reasons to consider RACV Travel Insurance:

  • $Unlimited overseas medical and hospital coverincluded on all international plans, with 24-hour emergency assistance available wherever you are in the world.
  • New-for-old luggage replacement applied to lost, stolen or damaged belongings.
  • No extra cost for international and domestic river cruisingǂǂ, or for riding motorcycles, mopeds and scooters.ǁ
  • Your kids and grandkids covered for free.++
  • 15% Member savings on all RACV travel insurance plans.
  • Named 2026 WeMoney winner for Best for Member Benefits and a multi-winner in the 2025 Mozo Expert and People’s Choice awards.⋄⋄
