At Circus Oz, we are so much more than just a spectacular, multi-skilled, physically exuberant, acrobatic circus show. We receive support from individuals, trusts and foundations and corporate partners that allow us to maintain our valuable community programs, build on our groundbreaking circus performances and provide access for audiences to experience the joy of circus.
As philanthropy manager, I draw on our guiding principles of Humanity, Community, Diversity and Hilarity.
I have the pleasure of building relationships with our generous individual donors and trusts and foundations that support a range of our activities at Circus Oz.
Our access program, A Good Time For All, shares the joy of circus, making a meaningful difference to the lives of many. This year, with the support of our donors, we raised $25,838, which meant more than 1000 people able to access a Circus Oz ticket free of charge and enjoy a live performance under our Big Top.
We believe everyone should be able to experience Circus Oz, regardless of circumstance, income or background. Some in our community are less fortunate and we know in some cases we can lend a helping hand.Groups such as The Mirabel Foundation, Wintringham Specialist Aged Care, Asylum Seekers Resource Centre and the Council of Single Mothers, who work with people who otherwise could not afford to attend a live performance, can access a ticket to Circus Oz.
We work with our humanitarian partner organisations to allow children and families to experience the infectious joy that comes from seeing a Circus Oz performance.
“…We lead such a humble life, and my kids are starting to realize how much they don’t get to do compared to many of their friends… They will cherish this experience and I am so incredibly grateful… You have made something possible for my kids that I can’t.”–Council of Single Mothers Member, 2015
Artistic development program
Our artistic development program, BLAKflip aims to provide a pathway for talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers to be identified, mentored and supported to become established independent artists.
Now in its fifth year, this highly successful program is generously supported by the private foundation, Annamila.
The program has so far hosted more than 40 participants in the annual masterclass program, with three participants being cast into the Circus Oz ensemble. To find out more and to see what the participants get up to, please visit our website.
For the rest of the year, I will focus on our annual fundraiser. On 20 October, in our gorgeous Melba Spiegeltent located in the heart of Collingwood, we will host a fast-paced and exciting crowd fundraiser, where guests have the opportunity to pledge their support for four Circus Oz programs.
We aim to raise $60,000 to support our artistic development and community access programs. They include:
- Circus Artifacts, a creative development fund aimed at innovatively exploring new relationships and pushing creative boundaries, which then positively inform our work as Australia’s national circus.
- Our Little Big Top Tour takes our circus to communities in regional areas without access to a suitable performing arts centre to experience the spectacle of a full Circus Oz show. In addition to the community performances, we will conduct circus skills workshops for younger people.
- Sidesault Residency program is about artform development through a series of new artistic collaborations, exploring the rich diversity of contemporary Australian circus. Circus Oz hopes to continue to bring together an eclectic group of independent circus companies.
- A Good Time For All, as discussed above, believes in making our Big Top shows accessible to all members of the community, irrespective of economic or social circumstance.
We always love welcoming New Mates to our mob, so if you are interested in attending please check out the details here.
It is only through the generous support of our audiences that all our visions for Circus Oz can truly come to life. Gifts and donations of all sizes are sincerely appreciated. As we are a not-for-profit, they are tax-deductible and can be made anonymously. To donate please feel free to get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
